It has now been recognised that root causes such as poverty and global inequalities should be identified and corrected where possible prior to escalation to emergency situations leading to people fleeing their countries.
On October 18th, 2016 immigrant students who participated in RYP program went to the field trip in Virginia. The field trip was organized by National Geographic. The purpose was to instruct the participants on the topic of human immigration and how to tell stories by using visual art.
The piercing eyes of the widely known photograph Afghan Girl taken by Steve McCurry has held audiences captivated for years. The photograph was taken in 1984 in the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan. After her Afghan village was attacked by Soviet Helicopters, killing her parents, Sharbat Gula, along with her siblings and grandmother walked to a refugee camp in Pakistan.
This would famous photograph was taken by Steve McCurry while he was in pakistan in one refugee camp.. Inside the school tent he noticed her first. Sensing her shyness, he approached her last.The image brought her recognition when it was featured on the cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic Magazine at a time when she was approximately 12 years old.
He has been documenting the refugee crisis around the world for over a decade. He is a National Geographic photographer and the founder of Everyday Refugees Foundation. As the former Associated Press Chief Photographer for the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan he covered conflicts across the region as well documenting major events in Europe, Asia, Africa and the US.
